Lydia Yokum, dau. of John Frederick and Mary Evans Yokum of Pennsylvania, married William Ogden about 1800. After Aseneth Ogden, b. 24 Apr 1818, daughter of Lydi and William Ogden, married Aaron B. Hallock, they moved to Friendsville, Wabash County, IL. Apparently in later years, Lydia Yokum Ogden lived with the Hallocks, as she died in Mt. Carmel, IL in 1856. I am trying to find supporting evidence (such as marriage and/or death information) as to Aaron B. Hallock and Aseneth Ogden. They raised a large family,in Wabash County, but I found nothing on them in the IL census or marriage information. One of their daughters, Martha "Mattie" Hallock, married Rufus B. Newkirk, and they too lived in Wabash County, IL and raised their children there. Mattie and Rufus would be my great-grandparents. Any Hallocks/Ogden's left in IL with information regarding these people? Thanks, in advance.

Surnames: MUNDY RIGG KNOWLES NEWKIRK HALLOCK
Submitter: Niona Mundy Case (nidocakc@aol.com)
Date: 17 Jan 2003

Family tradition says Grandpa Clarence Verner Mundy worked for "Uncle Doc" and "Aunt Alice" Knowles in Colorado from 1898 till 1903,when he returned to his home in Wabash County, IL and married Gertrude Asenith Newkirk, daughter of Rufus Newkirk and "Mattie" Martha Hallock of the Friendsville, IL neighborhood in early January 1903. They soon after the wedding, returned to Colorado where they lived, raised their four children and farmed until their deaths. My research seems to point to Uncle Doc being Eli Knowles, and Aunt Alice being Sarah Alice Mundy, who married first a Rigg in or around Mt. Carmel, IL; then apparently later she married "Uncle Doc" (Eli) Knowles, and they lived and farmed near Eastonville, CO around the turn of the century (1890-1900) This Sarah Alice would have been an aunt to my grandfather Clarence Verner/Verner Clarence Mundy (he went by C.V. or Vern in Colorado)as she was a sister to William Hardin Mundy, my grandfather's father. My problem is I can't find any "marriage" records after 1900 for IL, so cannot locate any 1903 license or certificate for my grandparents on file in IL. Also, cannot for sure say that Sarah Alice Mundy is the same "Aunt Alice" that was wife to "Uncle Doc" Knowles at Eastonville. Anyone out there able to clarify the mystery for me? Sure appreciate any help you can give.

Submitter: Niona Mundy Case (nidocakc@gwtc.net)
Date: 15 Jan 2003

My great grand parents, and their parents lived and are buried in Wabash County, IL. Our MUNDY line (my grandfather) married Gertrude Asenith Newkirk, also of Wabash County, IL in Jan 1903, and moved to El Paso County, Colorado for the next nine years. During that time, his parents died. I'm trying to put together our genealogy for his lineage back through their stay in IL from 1819 to 1903; and prior to that back to Metuchen, Piscataway Twp., Middlesex County, NJ to 1665 and before, if possible. Written record of a land transaction in 1665 is earliest "Mundy" data presently available to me. Our patriarch in New Jersey was Nicholas Mundy. Are there any Mundy's in IL interested in researching or sharing information on this branch of the Mundy family? My grandfather was Clarence Vernor (aka C.V. or Vern) Mundy, his parents were William Harden Mundy and Carodile Best; his grandparents were William Reed Mundy and Sarah Risley; and William Reed was son of Samuel Mundy and Phebe Reed who moved to Wabash/then Edwards County, near Palmyra in 1819 from Middlesex County, NJ;where three generations of Samuel Mundy's and two or three generations of Nicholas Mundy's traced back to the 1665 date of which I spoke at the start of this query. There is a Mundy book in print "Nicholas Mundy and Descendents who settled in New Jersey in 1665" by Ezra F. Mundy -- I have a copy of a copy of this.

Surnames: MCCLAIN BALLLARD PUTNAM RIGG
Submitter: Jocelyn Wilson (ariondesign@earthlink.net)
Date: 17 Dec 2002

I found an old query dated 9/1999 from a woman named Patty regarding BALLARD MCCLAIN BURNAUGH. I have all kinds of info to share with her, but her email is no longer valid. T his was the content of my email to her: Patty, I think I have found a connection. My Mother's maternal Grandfather was Daniel Jefferson Ballard, a preacher who died at a fairly young age, his father was Howard Putnam Ballard, who was married to Mary Jane McClain. Per my mothers records. Howard P. Ballard was born in 1825 in Wabash County Ill, died 1874. The children were as follows: Cynthia Ann Ballard Daniel Jefferson Ballard (my Great, Great Grandfather) George W. Ballard Henry M. Ballard Thomas S. Ballard - Your relation Melinda Ballard Benjamin F. Ballard Paris (who died at age 5 or 6) Howard ( who died at infancy) His Father was Joseph Ballard who married Hester Putnam. There were eight children, Ira was among them. I have this info too. Mary Jane McClain was the daughter of Charlie McClain and Lousia Sloan. I don't have much on them, other than anecdotal stories of the obstreperous Mary Jane (she smoked a pipe and had an occasional tot of whiskey). Her father's family came to visit the Ballard's with their African hand maidens in tow. This was scandalous to Howard P., who was English and an abolishionist. It is thought that the McClains were Jacobites that fled Scotland during/after the fall of Bonnie Prince Charlie and settled in the West Indies. I'm trying to trace this connection. Does this help? I am exploring my family's history and have discovered that one of my great uncles emigrated from England in 1845 and made it to Mt. Carmel, where he had a large farm. His name was George James Sharp He married Rebecca Chapman and they lived there quite a long time. They had several children and I am sure employed a number of people to help them with the farm. I have a record showing they are buried at the "Chapman Cemetery on Chapman Homestead". So it sounds like Rebecca's family had property as well. I live in St. Louis, MO, so it is not too far for me to visit and I would like to plan a trip once I have some good leads. Thanks Ellen

I need to add on to my original query: I left out some important info. The SSDI for Edna Manley has her death as Jul 1967. The reason I think this may be her is that the birth date matches the info on the 1900 census. Oral history has her father as George Lewis from Ireland.

Hi, I'm trying to find my ggrandmother Edna Manley - maiden name Lewis. According to my deceased grandmother, Edna was born in IL, as was her mother. Father born in IRE. Edna married my GGrandfather Michael Manley in Chicago about 1898. They are newlyweds on a Cook Co. census in1900 - and that's the last I can find on her. I found an Edna Manley on the SSDI - last residence in Wabash Co. None of the rest of my family ever lived in Wabash, so this is suspect. But the fact that my ggrandfather left her and died in FL, it's possible she moved out of Cook to live with siblings or other family members. I have no idea where in IL her side of the family resided, so Wabash is definitely a possibility. Any Manley's in your directories? Lewis' I'm sure are plentiful - I'd need more info to narrow that down. Any ideas will be appreciated! I have presented you with my 'brick wall'! Kathy Manley S.
